Being the largest city of Madhya Pradesh, Indore has major jails including the very famous Central jail of Indore which is the oldest and a model jail in the entire central region known for its exceptional programmes directed towards the welfare of its inmates.

Central Jail in Indore:

Jails in Indore Indore has one of the oldest jails in Central India called Indore Central Jail. It is not just a prison to detain the criminals. Rather Central Jail of Indore is the finest example of model jail where these prisoners are given the right to live with dignity and they are trained with several means of earning their livelihood.

It was established in the year 1877 and since then, it is housed in that same old building located amid the business and residential centers of Indore.

It is a huge complex covering total land area of 13.60 acres having 33 blocks and 3 cells. Though the capacity of this jail is to house 1150 inmate, it currently has more than 2500 prisoners.

In accordance with this over populated space, the jail authorities in Indore are planning to shift this central jail; on the outskirts of city around 12 kms away from it. It is one of the best managed jails in country.

The officials have planted CCTV with 3 cameras to monitor activities of the inmates inside the prison. It is one of the few jails where inmates are provided facility to talk to their families over telephone and better food arrangements without compromising with the quality of meals served to them.

There is an independent Medical officer to look after the well being of inmates and various sports facilities for their recreation. There is a well stocked library and monthly newspaper subscriptions to make them more educated as well.

History of Central Jail Indore:

Until the advent of 1875, there was a serious lack of jail premises in Indore city. It was then; this central jail was constructed in 1876-77 under minister ship of T Madhava Rao. This building even used currently was built with a cost of one lakh rupees and its administration was inspired by other jails in central provinces.

Around year 1900, this jail was under the control of judicial member of council until it was transferred under Inspector General of Prisons in 1904. Then, in 1911, State Surgeon was made ex officio inspector general of prisons till formation of Madhya Bharat. Later, the management of central jail went into the hands of Superintendent of Central jails and this practice is still followed there.

Vocational training at Indore Central Jail:

In an initiative to improve the living conditions of these prisoners, the jail officials have decided to develop a shopping complex at this jail where the products made by the inmates will be sold to the public.

The vocational training programmes conducted by the authorities to rehabilitate these prisoners help them to make some excellent goods that need to be marketed well to fetch good prices. These products are cotton kurtas, incense sticks, pottery and ceramic, salwar suits, coats, trousers, leather products, decorative pieces, travelling bags, ladies purse and hand bags.

Newer programmes are commenced with collaboration of big corporate houses like Tatas for improving the skills of prisoners. It is the result of their hard work and efforts of officials that Indore Central jail earned a huge profit by selling various goods produced therein. Currently, training is imparted to these prisoners in trades like manufacturing steel utensils, leather products, screen printing, offset printing, tailoring, carpentry, wood carving, pot making, etc. over the years this training module has provided and enhanced the kills possessed by these prisoners.

To induce better earnings, emphasis has always been laid on maintaining high quality of every product. The authorities have also begun training in IT to make these inmates computer literate and savvy in IT technology. Presently, programmes are run for basic computer literacy though they are planned to be upgraded to advance courses as well in the near future.

District Jail in Indore:

This is also running in an ancient edifice built around the year 1839. It was called Residency Jail under the British regime and was under control of Chief Medical Officer of a central agency. The district jail is a place where those convicted for less than 10 years of imprisonment are housed.

District jail of Indore is situated near residential areas of the city. Currently, it has 8 blocks with one female block for the prisoners. It has a capacity to house around 480 prisoners at a time. However, it remains slightly overpopulated with more prisoners including females and children, convicted and under trials.

There is a CCTV with 5 cameras installed within the jail premises to monitor the activities of inmates. This district level jail comes under control of Jail Superintendant Class II who is accountable to Jail Superintendent of Central Jail.
